Last weekend we heard the readings for the Twenty-sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time, in which Jesus advises His disciples that if their foot, hand or eye causes them to sin, it would be better to remove it that to be thrown, whole and able-bodied, in Gehenna. In his homily, Fr. Mark explains that Jesus' point was that we should avoid sin—all sin—at all costs. We need not do anything as severe as cutting off a limb; there are numerous simple sacrifices we can make to enable us to be who we really are:

  • Not exaggerating to makes ourselves better than we ought to be.
  • Not spinning the truth to save face.
  • Not lying to build ourselves up or tear others down.

Father also spoke of integrity and the freedom that comes with being honest about ourselves and others. We don't have to be defensive, or the best, or perfect in every way; we just need to own up to our faults, flaws and mistakes, and ask forgiveness.
