The readings for last weekend marked the Sixth Sunday in Easter, in which Jesus tells his disciples to love one another as He has loved them. Both Fr. Newton and Fr. Mark spoke of the depths of Jesus' loving example:
- Fr. Mark reminded us that the Lord gives us a self-sacrificing example of love, the opposite of which is selfishness, and warned against the skewed perception of love set by popular culture.
- Fr. Newton contrasted Jesus' unconditional and merciful love of everyone as children of God with our typical human notions of love based on attraction, nearness or kinship.
Both emphasized that Jesus, by word and example, calls us outside of ourselves to a love beyond human ability and understanding—a love that is made possible by Jesus' incarnation, passion and resurrection.
