Readings and Homilies for the Weekend of Jan. 20-21, 2018 (English and Español)

In the readings for last weekend, we heard the stories of Nineveh's repentance following Jonah's prophesy, as well as Jesus calling the people of his time to repentance, and Simon, Andrew, James, and John leaving their former lives behind to follow him. Fr. Mark's homily discusses repentance in the context of some of the major sins of our day, including abortion, and encourages us to help welcome people who have fallen into these and other sins back into God's mercy and love. He also urges us not to double down on sin, continuing to sin in order to cover up past sins. In Fr. Newton's homily, he reminds us that repentance is more than just turning around, away from evil; it involves turning around and following Jesus. He also tells us that, unlike a career (which is something we do), a vocation is something we are, and that all of us have a vocation as Christians to die to our own narrowness of vision and lifestyle in order to lift help up others.
