Readings and Homilies for the Weekend of April 28-29, 2018 (English and Español)

The readings for last weekend marked the Fifth Sunday in Easter, in which Saul arrives in Jerusalem but the disciples are frightened and do not believe he has converted until they see the fruits of his preaching and ministry. In the Gospel, Jesus tells his followers that he is the true vine, and we are the branches, attached always to the life-giving vine and called to bear fruit.

Fr. Mark called to mind the image of budding trees in spring: You can see where new life and growth is taking place, and prune it to channel that growth in the right way and get rid of excess that drags the tree down. The same, he said, applies to our spiritual life.

Fr. Newton spoke of Jesus' own close contact with His heavenly Father, and how the apostles and all of us today need to stay in constant contact with Christ. The image of the vine and branches, he said, helps us to understand the necessity of this close connection: As long as you remain attached to the vine, you freely receive life.
