Last weekend we heard the readings for the Twenty-Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time, in which Jesus urges a rich young man to follow the Commandments and, having accomplished this, sell his possessions, give to the poor and follow Him. In his homily, Fr. Mark draws our attention to the fact that Jesus doesn't answer the question, "What must I do to inherit eternal life?" with "Believe in me." Instead, he challenges the young man to fulfills the requirements of the Law. When the young man affirms that he does obey the commandments, Jesus calls him to conversion of heart and detachment. And the young man goes away sad, because that deeper conversion is difficult, even today.
